Guergana Savova, PhD, Boston Children's Hospital

Dr. Guergana Savova is currently an Associate Professor in Pediatrics at Boston Children’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School. Her graduate and post-graduate research focus is Natural Language Processing (NLP) as applied to the domain of medicine, specifically the clinical narrative created in practice. She has been the PI/site-PI of major NIH funding for 10 projects and a key investigator on an additional 10 projects, reflecting the expertise within her research team. With a focus on higher level semantic and discourse processing of the clinical narrative, her research employs machine learning methods and the creation of computable gold standards resulting in over 60 peer-reviewed publications and pioneering tools and structures that adhere to and progress the development of national and international standards within clinical informatics and NLP. Dr. Savova leads the development and enhancements of one of the very few open source software for information extraction in the clinical domain – clinical Text Analysis and Knowledge Extraction System (cTAKES), now a top level Apache Software Foundation project. Apache cTAKES is the first biomedical platform to be promoted as a top-level project within ASF with national and international committers.
